Publication: Making PDF documents

Post by lpaatero »

PDF are by far most common format for publishing go material. Many books are delivered to printing houses in PDF format.

Also quite common need to creation of small PDF for download, while enabling high-quality printing from same PDF.

Currently there are two good ways to create PDF documents with freely available tools. These tools should work in all platforms.

OpenOffice Writer and GOWrite 2.3
GOWrite 2.3 (or later) can export to OpenDocument text/graphics format. Recent OpenOffice versions do create small PDF with this format. This is good combination for those who want to use word processing for PDF authoring. Also this is probably fastest way to create publication.

Scribus and GOWrite 2.2
GOWrite 2.2 (and later) and export to SVG format. Scribus can import this, and exported PDF is reasonably sized. This is probably best tool combination for book-writing, as full power of scribus publishing software is available. I have written beginners book (http://gowrite.net/kirja)with these tools.

Currently I use OpenOffice 3 + GW 2.2 to create documents and PDF files as follows: I write the document in OpenOffice and insert tables. In every table cell, I put a go diagram. This gives good layout regardless of whether the table has borders. (Only for very large tables, OpenOffice is still a bit buggy.) Diagrams I copy from GW using CTRL + F to copy an area of the board. Then I paste them to OpenOffice using CTRL + V.

Although it is very good to hear that GW 2.3 will support also other ways using good file formats, my method (or a similar method with a different text / layout editor) is probably much better for creating long documents because the text editor is very powerful for... editing text.

On newer Macs 10.5, 10.6 & 10.7 they do not include the older PDF Printer options.
To emulate the built in "Save to PDF" option you get in standard OSX applications you should install the CUPS-PDF plugin.

THis is an open source interface to the built in CUPS PDF render engine in OS X.
CUPS-PDF allows you to set up GOWrite with the ability to save files directly to PDF.

NOTE: All PDFs are saved into the folder: /Users/Shared/CUPS-PDF/[user-name]

No information on that.
You probably should look at dedicated MAC forums for best information.
